Because sourdough is so acidic, it’s best to avoid using any metal utensils other than stainless steel when mixing starter feeds, dough, and anything else with your discard. These beautiful hand carved wooden sourdough spurtle spatulas are a must have for your sourdough starter mixing and scraping needs. A *spurtle* is traditionally a wooden rodlike Scottish kitchen tool, dating from the 15th century, that is used to stir thick concoctions such as porridge, soups, stews, and broths.
The FloatyGoat sourdough spurtle spatula is the perfect marriage of a traditional spurtle and a modern wooden spatula, making it an ideal tool for working with your pastey sourdough starter. It makes starter feeding a breeze and also does a great job of spreading layers on cakes and pastries. This unique design helps you scrape the sides and bottom of pots, jars, bowls, etc to prevent sticking or burning. It’s nimble design also makes it a wonderful all purpose spatula that you'll find new uses for every day.

The signature subtle bend in our spurtle makes it extra effective at scraping and spreading. The tall, skinny, curved shape of these spurtles is ideal for mixing your starter and scraping off the residue. Their shape makes it easy to scrape your sticky starter off on the sides of your jar and to minimize waste and clean up.
All FloatyGoat wooden utensils are designed by me and lovingly handcrafted here in Yorkshire by my business partner Zach at The Retuned Wood Company. Zach started his woodworking career as a guitar builder and then founded his own business creating a variety of functional wooden works of art - from furniture to kitchen tools.
At 28cm long and 2.5cm wide, it’s not too big or too small and easy to maneuver with its smooth wooden dowel.

*For best results, clean your wooden utensils with simply a wet cloth or hand rinse with lukewarm water. Gently hand wash with soap only when necessary. Do not soak or put in the dishwasher.
Because this product is handmade and not produced in a factory, we do not use harmful sealants. This product is a natural wood product and does require some minor maintenance over time. Apply some food-grade oil to the wood from time to time to help protect it and keep it looking its best!
